Hand pallet trucks are lightweight tools that enable the movement of one or more pallets without the need for a forklift or other large machinery. The hand pallet truck, also referred to as a pallet jack or a pallet lifter, is a portable tool that can be used to slide a set of blades into a pallet's open area, gently lift the pallet, and move it to another location. Modern pallet trucks use hydraulics that are powered by a small battery that is integrated into the design, as opposed to traditional pallet trucks that use cranks and levers to lift the pallet into position.

A set of blades on a basic hand pallet truck can be positioned to slide under a pallet and lift it several inches off the ground. The width between the two blades of the device can be changed to accommodate pallets of various sizes using a control panel at the opposite end of the device. A set of tiny wheels mounted on a base that supports both the controls and the blades also makes it simple to move the truck around. The rear set of wheels will typically swivel in most designs, making it simple to manoeuvre around corners. There are some designs that allow both the front and back sets of wheels to swivel.
